Wrinkle-Free Thanks to Dr. Kovak
The Longevity of Botox – Fact vs. Fiction
Each year, more and more people opt for less-invasive cosmetic treatments such as botulinum toxin injections (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport) to smooth wrinkles, crow’s feet, lip lines and more. There’s no denying these treatments are growing in popularity, but with all the information found online and in magazines, it’s hard to know what’s fact and what’s fiction.
Cosmetic Physician Stanley Kovak, MD, who received his training from the ‘Father of Botox’, Dr. Arnold Klein, debunks common myths surrounding injectables so you can plump and smooth with confidence.
Fact or Fiction? Botox “wears off” faster in people who frequently exercise.
Fiction. A lot of fit folks get Botox regularly, and there is actually no data out there that suggests Botox wears off quicker in people that are more active. However, people who are more active tend to use and strain their muscles a little bit more. They may notice that they are pulling all their fibers when they are exercising hard and doing so causes contraction.
Fact or Fiction? Exercising after receiving Botox can affect results.
Fact. I tell my patients not to exercise for the first 24 hours after receiving Botox, but after that time period, I usually give the green light. When exercising, you increase blood flow throughout the muscles into tissue which can potentially diffuse the Botox and move it where you do not want it. In doing so, it's not localized into the muscle you want it to treat.
Fact or Fiction? Contracting the muscle(s) that has been treated with Botox can positively affect results?
Fact. I instruct my patients to contract the muscle that has been treated for the first hour or hour and a half after treatment. The belief is that by contracting the muscle you draw the Botox into the muscle itself and it has a little longer-lasting effect. Studies have shown the effects of Botox lasted about two weeks longer in people who did this versus those who did not do this kind of contraction.
